With its distinctive large gold heatspreader, the Pentium Pro remains the largest ceramic processor mass-produced by Intel.
Introduced in 1995, it’s Intel’s sixth-generation x86-based microprocessor containing 5.5 million transistors. It was mainly used in servers, high-end desktops and supercomputers like
ASCI Red, and capable of both dual- and quad-processor configurations.
The Pentium Pro was released in speeds ranging from 133MHz to 200MHz.

Nov 1995Launch Day Intel releases the Pentium Pro at 150, 166, 180, and 200 MHz.
1996The 200MHz Workhorse The 200MHz / 512KB Cache variant becomes the standard for high-end servers.
Aug 1997The "Black Top" 1MB Intel pushes the limits with a massive 1MB L2 Cache version. To dissipate the extra heat, the gold cap was replaced with a black aluminum heatspreader.
1998Legacy Production winds down as the Pentium II Xeon takes over the server market.

Tcase (Maximum Case Temperature):
Standard processors (256KB, 512KB cache): 85°C
High-capacity processors (1MB cache): 80°C
The Pentium Pro’s large ceramic package and integrated L2 cache required careful thermal management. Most variants operated at a maximum case temperature of 85°C, while the higher-capacity 1MB cache versions ran slightly cooler at 80°C due to increased heat generation from the larger die.
